History of The Broad
The Broad was established by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad, who financed the $140 million building to house their extensive art collection. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler, the museum features a unique “veil-and-vault” architectural concept. The “veil” is the porous exterior that filters natural light into the galleries, while the “vault” houses the collection storage. The museum officially opened to the public on September 20, 2015.
