What “10,000+ LA homes” actually means.
Since 2005, Home Upgrade Specialist has completed:
| Trade | Total LA Installs (2005โ2026) | Recent Annual Run-Rate |
|---|---|---|
| HVAC system installations (AC, furnace, heat pump) | ~6,200 | ~800/year |
| Solar panel installations | ~2,100 | ~420/year |
| Tesla Powerwall + Enphase battery installations | ~640 | ~280/year |
| Roof replacements | ~580 | ~120/year |
| EV charger installations | ~480 | ~190/year |
| TOTAL completed projects | ~10,000+ | ~1,800/year |
Some homes received multiple trades, so the “10,000+ homes” count reflects unique addresses, not total projects.
How we actually do the work.
1. In-house W-2 employees, no subcontractors
Most LA HVAC and solar companies subcontract installs to crews of independent contractors. We don’t. Home Upgrade Specialist employs 28+ full-time W-2 technicians, electricians, and project managers. Every job site has a Home Upgrade Specialist employee leading the install โ never a subcontractor.
Why this matters: Subcontracted crews have no long-term accountability to YOUR install. If something fails three years later, the subcontractor moved on. With in-house crews, the same company that did the install handles the warranty service.
2. We file every rebate. Every time.
Most contractors hand you a rebate form at the end of the install and say “good luck filing this.” We don’t. Filing every applicable federal, state, and utility rebate is part of your Home Upgrade Specialist install at no extra charge. See our complete LA energy rebates stacking guide for the full list of programs we handle.
3. We size systems for the home, not for our margins
Industry-wide, oversizing HVAC equipment is common because larger equipment = larger contracts. We use Manual J load calculations on every install to right-size your heat pump or AC. The result: equipment that runs more efficiently, lasts longer, and costs less to operate.
Same philosophy on solar: we size your panels based on actual electric usage history (12 months of utility bills), not a one-size-fits-all square-foot calculation. Under NEM 3.0, oversizing solar without battery delivers worse ROI โ we won’t do it.
4. One project manager, one contract, one warranty
For combined-trade projects (heat pump + solar + battery + roof + EV), a single Home Upgrade Specialist project manager coordinates the entire install timeline. One person to call, one contract to sign, one 10-year workmanship warranty covering every trade.
5. Permits and inspections handled end-to-end
LADBS, LADWP, SCE, City of Santa Monica, City of Pasadena โ every permit and inspection is pulled by HUS and managed through final approval. You don’t talk to the city. You don’t schedule inspections. You don’t chase paperwork.
6. Honest comparisons against competitors
We publish honest side-by-side comparisons against our competitors โ including when other companies are the better fit. See our comparison pages for Solar Optimum, Sunrun, Tesla Energy, SunPower, Brody Pennell, JW Heating & Air, and 9 other LA-area contractors. We tell you when they’re the right fit.
Where we actually operate.
Home Upgrade Specialist installs in 21 Los Angeles cities/neighborhoods. Each city page below covers local climate considerations, permitting (LADBS vs city-specific), utility territory (LADWP vs SCE vs PWP/GWP/BWP), and applicable rebate programs.
