Add Powerwall to existing solar.
Got solar but no battery? You’re losing the NEM 3.0 game. Here’s how Home Upgrade Specialist retrofits Tesla Powerwall 3 onto ANY existing solar system in LA โ Sunrun, Solar Optimum, SunPower, Vivint, you name it.
NEM 3.0 broke solar-only economics.
If your solar system was installed before April 14, 2023 and you’re an SCE customer, you’re under NEM 2.0 (or NEM 1.0) โ favorable export rates. Adding a battery still improves your numbers but isn’t mandatory.
If you’re a NEW solar customer (post-April 2023) with no battery, you’re under NEM 3.0 โ selling solar exports at $0.05/kWh while paying $0.30-$0.45/kWh to import in the evening. Every kWh you export at noon and pay 6-9ร more to import at 6pm is a missed opportunity.
Adding a Powerwall captures that solar production for evening use. Result: typically 20-35% additional annual savings vs solar-only NEM 3.0.
Compatibility โ Powerwall 3 works with any solar.
Tesla Powerwall 3 is AC-coupled, meaning it connects on the alternating-current side of your electrical system through Tesla Gateway. This makes it compatible with literally any existing solar installation:
| Existing Solar Brand | Powerwall 3 Compatible? | Integration Method |
|---|---|---|
| Tesla Solar / Solar Roof | Yes (native) | Direct integration via Tesla app |
| Enphase microinverter | Yes | Gateway monitors via CT clamp |
| SolarEdge string inverter | Yes | Gateway monitors via CT clamp |
| SMA / Fronius string inverter | Yes | Gateway monitors via CT clamp |
| Older Power-One / Enphase Envoy | Yes | Gateway monitors via CT clamp |
| Sunrun, Vivint, SunPower legacy | Yes | Gateway monitors via CT clamp |
The only difference vs new-install pairing: existing system metering data is read via current transformer (CT) clamps rather than direct API integration. Powerwall still optimizes self-consumption identically.
Real LA retrofit cost.
Typical 2026 LA retrofit cost for adding 1ร Powerwall 3 to existing solar:
| Line Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Tesla Powerwall 3 unit | $9,500 |
| Tesla Gateway 3 + monitoring CTs | $1,800 |
| Installation labor + wall mounting | $1,900 |
| Electrical interconnection with existing panel | $1,400 |
| LADBS or city permit + final inspection | $650 |
| LADWP/SCE utility interconnection app | $350 |
| Gross install cost | $15,600 |
| Federal tax credit (if eligible) | โ$4,680 |
| NET COST (illustrative) | $10,920 |
Add ~$1,800-$3,500 if electrical panel upgrade is required (older homes pre-1985). Net figures are illustrative; federal tax credits may be available, subject to eligibility and current law, and Home Upgrade Specialist is not a tax advisor.
Installation timeline.
- 1Day 1-3: Free site assessment + electrical panel inspection
- 2Day 3-10: LADBS/city permit + utility interconnection application
- 3Day 10-14: On-site install (6-8 hours), system commissioning
- 4Day 14-21: Final inspection + utility PTO (Permission to Operate)
Total: 14-21 business days from contract signing to fully operational battery backup.
When NOT to retrofit (yet).
- โLADWP customer with no PSPS history โ your favorable net metering already minimizes the battery’s economic case. Retrofit if you want backup; the daily-savings math is marginal.
- โSolar system under 4 years old with included battery in contract โ some Sunrun PPAs include battery upgrade options at year 5-7. Wait if applicable.
- โPlanning to sell within 24 months โ battery adds value; any federal tax credit benefit depends on eligibility and ownership. Run the math.
