NEM 3.0 broke solar-only economics.
If your solar system was installed before April 14, 2023 and you’re an SCE customer, you’re under NEM 2.0 (or NEM 1.0) — favorable export rates. Adding a battery still improves your numbers but isn’t mandatory.

Tesla Powerwall 3 is AC-coupled, meaning it connects on the alternating-current side of your electrical system through Tesla Gateway. This makes it compatible with literally any existing solar installation:

The only difference vs new-install pairing: existing system metering data is read via current transformer (CT) clamps rather than direct API integration. Powerwall still optimizes self-consumption identically.
