When mini-split is the right call.
- โADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) โ most cost-effective HVAC for the 500-1,000 sq ft ADU footprint. No need to extend main-house ductwork.
- โRoom addition โ adding a master suite, sunroom, or office that the existing system can’t reach without major ductwork extension
- โGarage conversion โ converting garage to living space; mini-split installs cleanly with minimum invasion
- โHot/cold spots โ homes where existing central HVAC can’t balance temperatures (often older 2-story homes)
- โHistoric homes โ Pasadena, Beverly Hills, Hancock Park homes where ductwork would damage architecture; mini-split lines run discreetly
- โFailing central system + bad ductwork โ when ducts are 30+ years old and leaking 30%+, replacing with mini-split often makes more sense than re-ducting

All listed mini-splits are heat pump systems, which means they qualify for:
- โIRA Heat Pump Tax Credit: Up to $2,000 federal credit per tax year
- โTECH Clean California: $1,000-$4,000 per system depending on capacity
- โLADWP or SCE residential rebate: $500-$1,500 depending on utility territory

Installation considerations.
- โOutdoor unit placement โ needs 12-18″ clearance on all sides + concrete pad or wall mount
- โRefrigerant line routing โ runs from outdoor unit to indoor head; typically through exterior wall or attic, then through wall to interior head
- โCondensate drainage โ indoor head produces condensate; needs gravity drain or condensate pump
- โElectrical โ 220V/15-30A dedicated circuit per outdoor unit
- โAesthetics โ wall-mounted heads are the standard but cassette (ceiling-mount), floor-mount, and concealed-duct options exist for visual integration
