Both camps are describing something real. As a Tesla Certified installer that is also a licensed roofing contractor in LA (CSLB #1031989 & #1055444), we're in an unusual position to referee. Reddit claim: it's outrageously more expensive than solar panels

Verdict: Partly right — but usually the wrong comparison. Compared against adding panels to a roof that's staying, yes: the Solar Roof costs multiples, and threads making that comparison reach the right conclusion for their situation. But the product isn't an alternative to panels — it's an alternative to a new roof plus panels. For a homeowner who needs a reroof anyway and wants solar, the honest comparison is (premium reroof + panel system) vs (Solar Roof), and the gap narrows substantially — especially against higher-end roofing materials like tile or designer shingle. If your roof has fifteen good years left, Reddit's verdict is right: panels win. If you're reroofing regardless, run the real comparison before adopting a thread's.

Reddit claim: installation is a scheduling nightmare that drags for months

Verdict: Historically fair; territory-dependent now. Early Solar Roof threads (2020–2022 era) are full of genuine scheduling pain — canceled dates, long gaps between tear-off and energization, quote revisions. Much of that traces to the early rollout's capacity limits and to regions with thin certified-installer coverage. Verdict: Right — and worth taking seriously, not dismissing. Even the critical threads concede the aesthetics. For design-sensitive homes, HOA-influenced neighborhoods, and homeowners who simply refuse rack-mounted panels, the Solar Roof is often the difference between going solar and not. "I wouldn't pay for looks" is a budget statement, not a rebuttal — plenty of LA homeowners will, the same way they choose tile over 3-tab shingle.

Reddit claim: repairs and roof work after installation are a headache

Verdict: It depends on who installed it. The concern is legitimate: a solar roof is the roof, so anyone touching it later needs both roofing and PV competence. Threads describe owners bouncing between a roofer who won't touch the glass tiles and a solar company that doesn't do roofing. The mitigation is choosing an installer who is a licensed roofing contractor with local service — the same company answers for the waterproofing, the wiring, and the warranty. That's the one-contractor argument in its purest form.
