Why the thread answers disagree so much

A Powerwall 3 stores roughly 13.5 kWh and delivers up to 11.5 kW continuous. Whether one is "enough" depends on which job you're hiring it for: riding through evening peak rates every day, backing up essentials in an outage, or running most of the house including AC for days. Redditors answering "one was plenty" and "we needed three" are usually both right — about different jobs in different climates. Check the poster's location and goal before adopting their number.

Reddit claim: one Powerwall is enough for most homes

Verdict: Partly right — depending on the goal. For an SCE customer using a battery to store daytime solar and reduce evening grid purchases, one Powerwall can cover a meaningful share of evening use, but the result depends on the home's actual load profile and rate plan. Backup duration is a separate question: a single 13.5 kWh unit may provide useful outage coverage, but runtime depends on state of charge, connected loads, weather, settings and whether solar can recharge the battery. We model those factors instead of treating one unit as automatically "enough."

Reddit claim: a Powerwall can't start your AC — you need two or three

Verdict: Outdated as a blanket rule. Tesla currently rates Powerwall 3 at up to 11.5 kW continuous output with 185 LRA motor-start capability. That can support many residential air-conditioning systems, but compatibility still depends on compressor startup current, equipment configuration, simultaneous household loads and the approved backup design. Air conditioning can also consume stored energy quickly. Additional Powerwalls can increase both available power and stored energy, so system count should be based on the home's actual loads and desired outage coverage rather than a fixed rule.

Reddit claim: whole-home backup or don't bother

Verdict: Wrong as a blanket rule. Tesla supports both whole-home and partial-home backup designs. Which loads remain available during an outage depends on the number of Powerwalls, the home's electrical architecture, the backup equipment, any approved load-management controls and the selected circuits.   • Daily solar shifting + limited outage coverage: one Powerwall may be a reasonable starting point for some homes, subject to the actual evening load, rate plan and desired backup circuits.

How long does one Powerwall run essentials?
There is no responsible fixed-hour answer without the load list. Runtime depends on battery state of charge, which circuits are backed up, actual usage, weather, system settings and whether solar can recharge the battery during the outage. Adding high-demand loads such as air conditioning can shorten runtime substantially.

Does Powerwall qualify for SGIP?
Do not assume an SGIP rebate in the project price. Regular residential SGIP budgets are closed to new applicants, and any remaining income-qualified pathway must be checked for current eligibility, funding and waitlist status before it is treated as savings.
