What can a home battery actually run? Reddit’s backup debate, fact-checked

Every fire season and every PSPS shutoff, the same questions surge through r/solar: can a battery run my AC? Do I need "whole-home" backup? Is a battery even worth it if I just want the lights on? The threads mix up two numbers — kilowatts and kilowatt-hours — and half the arguments dissolve once they're separated. We install and coordinate battery-backup projects across Los Angeles and Orange County as a Tesla Certified installer, so here's the debate, untangled around actual loads, electrical conditions and backup goals.

First, the two numbers Reddit keeps conflating

kW is how much the battery can deliver at once (can it start and run your AC?). kWh is how much energy it stores (for how long?). A battery can be powerful enough to run everything and still drain in two hours — or modest but sized to keep essentials up for two days. Most thread fights are two people using the same word "size" for different numbers.

Reddit claim: a battery can't run your air conditioning

Verdict: Outdated as a blanket rule — it depends on the battery, the AC and the backup design. Tesla currently rates Powerwall 3 at up to 11.5 kW continuous output with 185 LRA motor-start capability, and Tesla lists air conditioners among loads that Powerwall systems can back up. Whether a particular system can support your AC still depends on compressor startup current, equipment configuration, simultaneous loads and the number of Powerwalls. Running air conditioning can also reduce backup duration quickly, so AC should be evaluated as part of the load plan rather than assumed in or out.

Reddit claim: whole-home backup is a waste — back up essentials only

Verdict: Partly right. Essentials-only backup can be a cost-effective approach when the goal is to keep refrigeration, lighting, internet, medical equipment and selected outlets available during an outage. Tesla also supports whole-home backup when the system is sized and configured for the home's loads. Load management may be part of some approved designs, but it should not be assumed to happen automatically in every installation. The right answer comes from listing what an outage must not interrupt in your house, then sizing and configuring the system to that list.

Reddit claim: batteries aren't worth it just for outages

Verdict: Partly right — but backup is only one possible value stream. In SCE territory under California's Net Billing Tariff, a battery can store daytime solar for later self-consumption and may reduce evening grid purchases. The economic value depends on the customer's rate plan, usage, solar production, export compensation, battery settings, financing and project cost. Outage protection is a separate resilience benefit. California battery incentives should not be assumed in the project price: regular residential SGIP budgets are closed, and any remaining income-qualified pathway must be checked for current funding, waitlist status and eligibility before it is treated as savings.

Reddit claim: no point getting a battery without solar

Verdict: Wrong as a rule. A battery-only system may be able to charge from the grid and provide outage backup, depending on the utility, rate plan, interconnection rules and system settings. Solar can extend outage support by recharging the battery when production and weather allow, but it does not guarantee indefinite backup. The sequencing question — battery now, solar later, or both together — should be reviewed against the home's utility account, electrical design and goals.

Where Reddit can't help you

Backup sizing starts from your circuits, your usage, and what an outage actually costs your household, none of which a thread can see. A free design consultation walks the load list, the kW/kWh sizing, and the solar-pairing question in order. If the project also involves HVAC, roofing or solar, use our Los Angeles solar, battery, HVAC and roofing integration guide to compare the whole scope together.

FAQ

How long will a battery run my house?
There is no universal runtime. Backup duration depends on battery capacity, state of charge, the circuits being supported, actual household usage, weather, system settings and whether solar can recharge the battery during the outage. High-demand loads such as air conditioning can shorten runtime substantially.

Do outages even happen enough in LA to matter?
Foothill and canyon communities in SCE territory see PSPS shutoffs in fire weather; grid heat events affect everyone. Frequency varies block by block — your history matters more than the county's.

Where does the battery get installed?
Typically garage or exterior wall, subject to setback and clearance rules in code — placement is part of design, not an afterthought.

Grid charging vs solar charging — does it matter for incentives or utility programs?
It can. Program eligibility, rate-plan treatment, interconnection requirements and battery operating rules can depend on how the system is configured. For new homeowner-owned residential projects in 2026, do not assume the former federal Section 25D residential credit applies; current utility, state, manufacturer or income-qualified programs must be verified separately.
