Whole-home backup vs. essential-load backup.

Not every home needs to run every circuit during an outage. The choice between whole-home and essential-load backup shapes system size, cost, and electrical requirements.

Whole-Home Backup

All circuits stay live during an outage — HVAC, EV charger, pool pump, all lighting, all appliances. Requires adequate battery capacity for your full household load and a compatible panel configuration. Best for homes with higher backup budgets, medical equipment needs, or frequent wildfire-zone outages (PSPS events).

Specific backup duration depends on approved design, battery capacity, solar production and actual usage. Runtime depends on battery capacity, total load, whether solar continues charging, and weather conditions. We model estimated performance during your estimate.

Essential-Load Backup

Selected critical circuits are separated onto a backup sub-panel: refrigerator, key lighting, internet, CPAP or other medical devices, select outlets. The rest of the home loses power during an outage. Best for most residential installs — covers what matters most while keeping costs manageable.

Requires a backup load panel (critical load sub-panel) to isolate backed-up circuits. We specify exact requirements based on your goals and existing electrical during the estimate.

Solar + storage

How battery storage works with solar and NEM 3.0.

A battery changes how your solar system works — not just during an outage, but every day you generate more than you use.

  • Store excess solar instead of exporting it. When your panels produce more than your home uses, excess energy charges the battery instead of being sent to the grid — available for evenings, cloudy days, or outages.
  • NEM 3.0 applies to SCE, PG&E, and SDG&E — not LADWP. Net Billing (NEM 3.0) reduces export credit rates for customers of Southern California Edison and other IOUs, making battery self-consumption a stronger economic strategy for SCE solar customers. LADWP and Burbank Water & Power customers are on their own net-metering programs — not NEM 3.0 — which we review specifically for LADWP-territory homes.
  • Time-of-use rate management. Under SCE time-of-use plans, electricity costs more during evening peak hours. A battery charged by solar during the day can offset peak-rate draw — the economic value depends on your specific rate plan, usage, and system configuration.
  • Solar-charged backup. With the right inverter and system configuration, your solar panels can continue charging your battery during a grid outage, extending backup without relying solely on stored energy. Configuration requirements vary by inverter type and system design.

LADWP vs. SCE battery planning.

Your utility is the single most important factor in battery planning — it determines export rates, available rebate programs, and interconnection rules.

LADWP Territory

  • Most of the City of Los Angeles — Encino, Studio City, Van Nuys, Silver Lake, Koreatown, and more
  • LADWP runs its own net-metering program — separate from NEM 3.0, which applies to SCE and other IOUs, not LADWP
  • LADWP Consumer Rebate Program for qualifying equipment — amounts, availability, and eligibility vary and are subject to LADWP approval
  • SGIP eligibility may apply — review required (see below)

SGIP battery rebate eligibility review.

California’s Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) offers rebates for qualifying home battery installations. Eligibility is not automatic — it depends on reservation windows, available funding, and multiple program-specific factors.

  • Reservation windows and funding tiers. SGIP rebates are issued through reservation steps tied to available funding. When a funding bucket is exhausted, new applications wait for the next round. Standard, Equity, and Equity Resiliency tiers carry different incentive levels and eligibility criteria.
  • Eligibility factors. Battery size, utility territory, income tier, equipment type, and prior SGIP participation all affect whether a project qualifies and at what incentive level.
  • No fixed rebate amount. We review SGIP eligibility and help organize required documentation — but approval, incentive amount, and timeline depend on the CPUC and program administrator, not on HUS. Rebate amounts are design-dependent.
  • Permitted and inspected work required. SGIP requires a permitted and passing-inspection installation as part of the rebate process. We coordinate permitting as part of every battery install.

Electrical planning

Backup load panel & Gateway overview.

The right electrical configuration is what makes battery backup actually work when the grid goes down. Here is what to know before your estimate.

  • Backup load panel (critical load sub-panel). For essential-load backup, a dedicated sub-panel separates your backed-up circuits from the rest of the home. During an outage, battery power flows only to those circuits. We specify sub-panel sizing and circuit selection based on your backup goals and existing electrical.
  • Tesla Gateway and Powerwall 3 architecture. Tesla Powerwall installations use a Backup Gateway (or the integrated Powerwall 3 system architecture) to manage automatic transfer between grid and battery during an outage, manage solar charging, and communicate with the Tesla app. Correct placement and electrical integration determine reliable switchover behavior.
  • Automatic transfer on outage. When the grid goes out, a properly installed Gateway isolates the home (or backed-up circuits) from the grid and switches to battery power within milliseconds — no manual action required.
  • Panel capacity and electrical upgrades. Some homes need a panel upgrade or additional breaker space to accommodate battery equipment. We assess your existing panel during the site visit and specify any required electrical work upfront — no surprises after the estimate.

What is the difference between Tesla Powerwall and Enphase battery storage?

Tesla Powerwall 3 is a single integrated system with a built-in inverter, offered in 13.5 kWh usable capacity per unit and designed for whole-home or essential-load backup. Enphase IQ Battery 5P units are smaller (5 kWh each), stackable for scalable capacity, and integrate tightly with Enphase microinverter solar systems. The right choice depends on your existing solar setup, utility, backup goals, and electrical panel. We review both during your estimate.

Can a home battery cover my whole home during an outage?

It depends on the system size, your home’s load, and how long the outage lasts. Whole-home backup covers all circuits; essential-load backup covers selected critical circuits only. We size and configure the system based on your goals and electrical setup — we do not guarantee any specific backup duration, as runtime depends on battery capacity, load, weather, and whether solar continues charging during the outage.

How does battery storage work with solar under NEM 3.0?

NEM 3.0 (Net Billing) applies to customers of SCE, PG&E, and SDG&E — not to LADWP or other municipal utilities, which set their own net-metering rules. Under NEM 3.0, export credit rates for solar sent to the grid are lower than under prior NEM 2.0, which can make storing excess solar in a battery and self-consuming it a useful strategy for some SCE customers. LADWP customers should review LADWP’s current net-metering program separately.

Is my battery eligible for the SGIP rebate in California?

SGIP (Self-Generation Incentive Program) rebates for battery storage depend on the reservation window, available funding, battery size, income eligibility tier, utility territory, and current program rules — they are design-dependent. We review SGIP eligibility and help organize documentation during your estimate, but approval and incentive amount depend on program status at time of application.

Do I need a backup load panel to install a home battery?

For essential-load backup, a backup load panel (critical load sub-panel) is typically required to separate backed-up circuits from the rest of the home. What is the difference between LADWP and SCE for battery planning?

LADWP serves most of the City of Los Angeles and runs its own net-metering and rebate programs — separate from NEM 3.0. SCE serves many Orange County and LA County addresses, but some nearby cities have municipal utilities or mixed service areas. If the specific address is on SCE, NEM 3.0 (Net Billing) may apply.
