Essential-load backup: what it covers and what it does not.
In an essential-load configuration, selected circuits are physically moved to a backup load sub-panel. During a grid outage, the battery powers only those circuits — the rest of the home goes dark. This is intentional: by limiting what the battery powers, you dramatically extend how long those backed-up circuits can stay live.

Backup load panel: the key to essential-load backup.
Essential-load backup requires a backup load panel (critical load sub-panel). This is the electrical component that makes the configuration work.
- →What it does. The sub-panel receives selected circuits from your main panel and connects them to the battery output. During a grid outage, the battery powers the sub-panel; the rest of the home (on the main panel) loses power. When grid power returns, the system transfers back automatically.
- →Circuit selection is done during installation. We review your existing panel, your backup priorities, and the battery’s capacity to determine which circuits go on the sub-panel. You participate in that decision during the estimate process.
- →Automatic transfer. The Tesla Powerwall Gateway or Enphase IQ System Controller manages automatic transfer between grid and battery during an outage — no manual action required. Transfer happens within milliseconds.

- →SGIP eligibility review. California’s Self-Generation Incentive Program may offer rebates for qualifying battery storage systems, including essential-load configurations. - →LADWP territory (most of City of LA). LADWP runs its own rebate and net-metering programs, separate from NEM 3.0. LADWP Consumer Rebate Program eligibility varies. We review LADWP programs during your estimate.

What is essential-load battery backup?
Essential-load backup means selecting specific critical circuits to remain powered during a grid outage — refrigerator, key lighting, internet router, CPAP or other medical devices, select outlets. Those circuits are separated onto a backup load sub-panel. The rest of the home goes dark during an outage. This is the most common residential battery backup configuration because it covers what matters most at a manageable cost.
What circuits can I choose for essential-load backup?
You can choose any circuits your existing panel allows to be separated — typically: refrigerator, key lighting zones, internet router/modem, medical devices, select outlets, and sometimes a single HVAC unit or mini-split. High-draw loads like electric ranges, EV chargers, and pool equipment typically are not backed up in essential-load configurations because of the battery capacity required. Does essential-load backup require a backup load panel?
Yes. Essential-load backup requires a backup load panel (also called a critical load sub-panel) to physically separate the backed-up circuits from the rest of the home’s electrical system. During an outage, the battery powers only the circuits on the sub-panel. We specify the sub-panel size and circuit selection based on your goals and existing electrical during the estimate.
How long will essential-load backup last during an outage?
Runtime depends on battery capacity and the actual loads running on your backed-up circuits. A single Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh) powering a modest essential-load set — refrigerator, lighting, internet, outlets — may last significantly longer than the same battery powering whole-home loads. Specific backup duration depends on approved design, battery capacity, solar production and actual usage. We model estimated scenarios during your estimate.
Is essential-load backup less expensive than whole-home backup?
Generally yes, because it may require fewer battery units. However, essential-load backup does require a backup load panel (sub-panel) installation, which adds electrical cost. Overall, most homeowners find essential-load backup to be a more cost-effective entry point than whole-home backup, while still protecting the circuits that matter most.
Can I upgrade from essential-load to whole-home backup later?
In many cases, yes — adding battery capacity and adjusting the electrical configuration can expand backup coverage over time. Compatibility depends on your existing battery system, inverter, and panel. We design systems with expansion in mind where possible and specify what future upgrades would require.
