What is a Manual J load calculation?
Manual J is the industry-standard method — published by ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America) — for calculating exactly how much heating and cooling a home needs, measured in BTUs per hour. Instead of guessing from floor area, it models how heat actually moves into and out of your specific house: through walls, windows, the roof, and air leakage. The result is the real “load” your system must meet on a design-hot or design-cold day.
Done right, Manual J tells us the correct capacity (in tons or BTUs) before any equipment is chosen. It’s the foundation everything else rests on — AC replacement, heat pumps and mini-splits alike.
Oversized and undersized both hurt.

Why can’t I just size AC by square footage?

What happens if my system is oversized?
